SNVFD Auxiliary

Sautee resident Elizabeth Wells and Station #3 wives - Kathy Williams, Kay Lumsden, Gae Stovall - are organizing a Sautee-Nacoochee volunteer firefighter auxiliary. "The Station #3 volunteers do so much beyond answering fire and medical emergency calls. They continually train. They know every home in the area and most of the people. They organize and participate in the Pig Out every year. And that just the beginning," said Elizabeth Wells. "We thought it was time to officially help out. Everyone, that includes men, is invited to join. "In the past, I think the Red Cross took water and cokes to the volunteers while they were on a fire call. It would be wonderful if we could do that again. We would be responsible for fundraisers. We would help wherever there was a need." The firefighters echo the need for a strong auxiliary. If you are interested in participating, call Kathy Williams at 878-3349 or Elizabeth Wells at 878-2030. Join hands with the firefighters to help build a strong, safe community. Financial donations may be sent to SNVFD, PO Box 174, Sautee, GA 30571

Grab a Bite

Young restaurants are bubbling up throughout the area - just in time for late summer and autumn visitors. Checking out these little bistros also provides a great excuse to escape routine kitchen duties.

North Georgia Bar-B-Q Company - on the corner of the four-way stop just down from Helen's welcome center. Wes Smith creates the standards - BBQ pork, ribs and chicken, all with the appropriate sides and Brunswick stew by the cup, bowl or quart. Then there are smoke dogs and "HOT pig stew." If you didn't get to taste test North Georgia's fare at Skylake's Halloween feast last fall, drop by. Hours: Sunday - Thursday 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Phone: 706-878-5753.

The Sautee Trail Café - 3933 Ga.17 on the way to Clarkesville. Many Skylakers already have found the log cabin on the left. Contractor Danny Holcomb, who built homes in Skylake, his wife Judy and artist/waitress daughter Jessie now are busy building breakfasts, lunches and dinners. Biscuits, eggs, pancakes and a variety of meats top the morning. Sandwiches, burgers, and a daily special rule at lunch. Or select from fried chicken, barbecue (catered by North Georgia Bar-B-Q Company) and steaks. Too busy to sit down? Drive around back to the take-out window, but remember this is not fast food. Hours: Monday 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Tuesday -Saturday 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday closed. Phone: 706-754-8040.

Baron York Café - on the square in Clarkesville above Mountain Gallery. An exterior staircase leads to this quaint, mountain-style English tea room. Proprietor Dea Irby fashions soups, quiches, breads and sandwiches daily, but Frango Surprise, seasoned chicken and cheese baked in a pastry, is a constant. A variety of loose leaf tea and Habersham blend coffee accent the Baron York Sampler, an assortment of fanciful desserts, also served individually. Yorkies, scones with mock Devonshire cream and lemon curd, are always available. Reservations are suggested, but they're a must for full afternoon tea, private parties and club meetings. The café also is open following Community Theatre productions on Thursday nights and Sunday afternoons. Stop by Friday and Saturday for light evening fare. Hours: Monday - Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 8 to 11 p.m. Phone (cell): 706-248-0160.

You may not find a Bone's or Bacchanalia but there are some pretty good restaurants in the area. Closest to Skylake is the Stovall House. Then there's Bernie's at Nachoochee Valley Guest House. Try Gene Mara's Nacoochee Grill just south of Helen. Go east to Stephen's* or Zanzo's* or Sharkey's* in Clarkesville. There's a buffet at the Lodge at Unicoi State Park. Just north of Clarkesville is Glen Ella Springs. Fast food? Most of the usual suspects can be found in Cleveland, Clarkesville, Cornelia and Helen. Mexican? There's El Campesino in Cleveland and Cornelia*. German? Edelweiss on Duncan Bridge. Pizza? Papa's in Cleveland. Bakeries? Country Bake Shoppe on the Helen Highway and Hofer's of Helen. Or pop in at one of the cafes scattered in between.

*Denotes beer and wine sales. Plan to brown bag everywhere else.

Anna Ruby Falls

Part of the Chattahoochee National Forest, this 1,600-acre scenic area features one of North Georgia’s most spectacular waterfalls. Anna Ruby Falls marks the junction of Curtis and York Creeks. (The York Creek that wanders through Skylake is a different critter). Curtis Creek drops 153 feet and York Creek 50 feet to form these twin falls.. From the falls, it becomes Smith Creek and tumbles downhill to Unicoi Lake and then to the Chattahoochee River. Plan on a short hike from the parking lot. There is a $2 parking fee. Telephone: 706-754-6221.

Smithgall Woods — Duke’s Creek

The 5,555-acre regional education center offers programs for school-age children and employs a full time Master Teacher and Department of Natural Resources staff. Though hiking and mountain biking are always options, there’s prime trout fishing. Dukes Creek has been named one of the “Top 100 Trout Streams in America. All fishing, however, is limited to artificial lures with barbless hooks, and all trout must released. Reservations are required. Telephone: 706-878-3087.

Hardman Farm

Coming soon to an Indian Mound near you, the 171-acre Hardman Farm is being preserved as a living museum through public and private efforts. Descendants of Lamartine G. Hardman, Georgia governor from 1927-31, donated the property and its famed Nacoochee Indian Mound to the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation in 2001. Originally built in 1822 as a summer home by John Nichols, the grounds include an opulent (at that time) Italianate villa and 27 outbuildings. Stay tuned as work progresses.

Shopping

Looking for a Kmart or Wal-Mart? Go east to Cornelia. Home Depot or Lowe's? South down Ga.129 to Gainesville or down Ga. 400 to Dawsonville. The North Georgia Outlets Mall is hard against 400 at the Dawsonville exit. And don't forget to check other outlet stores in neighboring Helen or in Commerce.

Adult Beverages

The alcoholic beverages referendum on the Nov. 4, 2003 county ballot did not pass, so unless you know someone who measures his corn crop in gallons or quarts, you're almost out of luck. In Helen, however, local ordinances permit sales of alcoholic beverages. Check out Helen Cellar, Bavarian Bottle Shop, Alpine Brew or Betty's, all on or just off Main Street. Over in Habersham County, however, beer and wine sales are allowed.
